Schriften-Klassifikation

An Hand von gestalterischen Erkennungsmerkmalen werden Schriften in verschiedene Klassen eingeteilt. Die DIN 16518 ist eine zum Teil veraltete aber mangels sinnvoller Alternativen immer noch gültige Klassifikation von Schriften nach Gattungen und Kategorien. Das Normblatt 16518 wurde im August 1964 vom Deutschen Institut für Normung (DIN) herausgegeben und ist stark an den Vorschlag der Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) angelehnt. Unter Schriftexperten ist diese Norm sehr umstritten, jedoch noch immer Ausbildungsgrundlage in Berufen der grafischen Industrie. Ihr wird vor allem vorgeworfen, dass ihr Schema zu altmodisch sei und der Schriftentwicklung der letzten Jahre nicht mehr genügt. Eine Überarbeitung der Norm ist in Arbeit, eine Einigung der Experten über eine Neufassung jedoch noch nicht absehbar.
Bei der Einteilung in Klassifikationsgruppen wurden folgende Abänderungen zu

Broken Types
Gebrochene Schriften (DIN 16518: Gruppe X)

Humanists and Garaldes
Renaissance-Antiqua (DIN 16518: Gruppe I und II)

Transitionals
Barock-Antiqua (wie DIN 16518 Gruppe III)

Didones
Klassizistische Antiqua (wie DIN 16518 Gruppe IV)

Slab Serifs
Serifenbetonte Linear-Antiqua (wie DIN 16518 Gruppe V)

Lineales
Serifenlose Linear-Antiqua (wie DIN 16518 Gruppe VI)

Glyphics
Antiqua-Varianten (ähnlich DIN 16518 Gruppe VII)

Scripts
Schreibschriften (wie DIN 16518 Gruppe VIII)

Die DIN-Gruppe IX „Handschriftliche Antiqua“ entfällt. Die dort zusammengefassten Schriften sind bei deutlich handschriftlichem Charakter unter Schreibschriften (VIII), bei ausgeprägtem Antiqua-Charakter in der stilistisch entsprechenden Klassifikationsgruppe untergebracht.
Die DIN-Gruppe X, „Gebrochene Schriften“ wurde als ganze in die Gruppe I überführt.
